This was a chance to make a spectacular movie- they spent good money on it but they blew it. The acting is poor ( including Mirren) and the portrayal of Catherine is superficial and farcical. Great pity

I would like to see a movie about Catherine the Great that is much more historical and accurate instead of the same silly, fictional drama that seems to be milked over and over. Yes, she had lovers, but did not openly flurt with men all the time. She was not power hungry, rather she knew that power and influence held great weight and that comes out when she usurps Peter who, in case you didn't know, the Russian people hated because of his severe lack of commitment to his role as Tzar and for his own hatred of Russia. Catherine proved her commitment to the Russian people, the nobility, the church, and the military. By all rights she was a good ruler. She made a lot of good reforms. I won't say she's perfect because there were tough times during her reign just like any monarch during the time.
