Ricky Gervais mistakenly thinking he could carry a full length film without the help of any of the original supporting 'Office' cast and crucially without any input from Stephen Merchant…..plus the big feel good factor from the series, the happy ending for David, is taken away from the viewer as it's implied the lady he met at the end who liked him, is no longer with him.

Don’t get me wrong here, Ricky Gervais is one of my greatest heroes, I love everything he does and says. The Office, Extras, Life’s Too Short, The Ricky Gervais Show I think are tantamount to genius. But this was just too depressing. The Office had it’s sad moments but it was also hysterically funny.

Nothing about this movie was funny at all, it was just awkward and truly depressing to watch a man throw his life and dreams away like this. The scene when the band make him pay for their time and drinks just to sit with him was the moment it went way too far for me. I don’t care how awkward or irritating someone can be, they just don’t deserve that.

I could be wrong, but is it due to Stephen Merchant not being involved in Gervais’ later work that it’s not as good? Does he need Merchant to balance out the depression with optimism?

I don’t know what went wrong with this one but man… it just wasn’t good.

gervais always puts dare i say too much sadness and humility into his writing and i find its missing Steve Merchants input to balance the comedy with Ricky's writing.

    A shame really.
This film basically renders The Office and its ending, meaningless.
The film is good enough, if The Office series hadn't existed but it just attempts to rehash the whole essence of the series in 90 minutes, in an utterly inferior manner.

Just watched this; brilliant. The only annoying thing is that I can't stop singing Native American: "Oh, oh, oh, Native American, fly like an eagle sit like a pelican".
