The miniseries, written by Ronan Bennet (Top Boy) and directed by J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as Robert Catesby, who was the driving force behind the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 London. The story focuses on Catesby, a committed Catholic at a time when Protestant England persecuted Catholics relentlessly, as his refusal to abandon his religion brings him to the edge of financial, social and psychological ruin. Mark Gatiss (Game of Thrones, Sherlock) plays Robert Cecil, King James’ spymaster, who directs efforts to hunt down, torture and kill priests, while rank-and-file Catholics are subject to oppression and the loss of their property.

Fucking religion really?! Protestant Catholic killin eachother over same religion.. This was sooo boring and pointless. Nothing happens just God, true religion this and torture that blah blah blah. It's all about the failed Guy Fawke assasination Zero explosions so zero gunpowder.. should've rethought the title and whole show. Two thumbs way fuckin down. Liv Tyler got ugly and fat

    Robert Catesby.

Kit wanted to play his relative in the new BBC One drama Gunpowder which tells the story of the failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. That wasn't the only famous link to his family during the time of the plot.

"Lord Harington (on his father's side) was in the Houses of Parliament at the time that Catesby was trying to blow it up," he explains.

"As Catesby's head was marched past on a pipe, Harington is quoted as saying 'He's an ugly fellow isn't he?' and I thought that is brilliant that my dad's side was slagging off mum's side way back in 1605.

"I wanted to get that line in but it never made it." Just thought I'd add some context to the discussions below. Remember Rememberthe6thofNovember…Midterms are coming

At least we know those two morons who ruined season 8 of GOT didn’t write the ending to this story. If they did a paralyzed guy who plays with ravens, (turns out the ravens are useless in a time of danger) tells everyone he meets he is no longer human and can’t take part in a normal life, has ruined more than a few love lives with his psychic visions of the past, is really into certain trees, always needs someone to “hold the door” idk, and who seems to be on one heavy mushroom trip at all hours of the day… would end up as The King of England by the end of the show. Who wouldn’t choose a person like that right?? Lol.
Thinking about all that makes me miss Game of Thrones even if I do hate how they did tons of things in that last season.
