was she schizophrenic, or have another gift/curse illness? psychedelics?
Joan Didion seems so mysterious and is an essayist and a novelist. What a woman! What a life!
Watched this today and teared up at certain parts. Can't wait to start reading Slouching Towards Bethlehem!
The moment the documentary ended, I logged on to my computer so that I could order her books immediately. They came in the mail and the first one I read was “Slouching Towards Bethlehem.”
She has the power to shift paradigms. I highly recommend her work to anybody interested in journalism, or just interested in writing that is truly great.
Opens with the music of Canned Heat over pictures of the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco. Canned Heat was a Los Angeles based band, born and raised there, and they played the Sunset Strip, not the Haight. Cognitive dissonance for me right off the bat.
She mentions being "snowbound" but snow in Sacramento is extremely rare, the most snowfall measured in the downtown area in any 24-hour period was 3.5 inches on January 4-5, 1888.
She says Manson made it all "inexplicable", but just before saying that, she describes a party at her Hollywood house where guest cars were stolen and drugs were found on the floor of her daughters room; then why suddenly inexplicable?
Difficult to trust.
Fun fact: Greta Gerwig (an indie actress who directed and wrote the Oscar nominated film Ladybird) said she was inspired to write ladybird by Joan didion
I love the "Official Trailer," but wish it had a less elegaic tone. She's not dead yet (and all of her fans, myself included, wish she could live forever).
Today, I must face my own personal and tragic experiences with grief, sadness and loss. Today, I watched this documentary. Today, I discovered a new literary icon. Today marks the anniversary of the Manson murders. And today, I fell completely in love with Joan Didion.
glorp
does anyone know the name of the song that starts at 1:10?
Ew, if not for her shitty Buzzfeed style articles wouldn't exist. Not that her work wasn't great, but what is has allowed to spawn is absolutely appalling
Netflix should definitely make one on Susan Sontag as well.
Netflix is churning out these biographical documentaries with extreme hyperbole, cheesy emotional music overstating every little thing that happens in a famous persons life. All identical, instead of playing to the individuality of these characters. Literally of an assembly line.
I always think the American spelling of the word "centre" lacks a centre, if that makes sense.
I'm in a college writing course right now and our main focus this whole semester is on reading and analyzing Didion through our own writing. Every time I go to read her essays I am always taken in by what she has to say. Such a great essayist
She's a radical leftist and seldom writes well.
The female Hunter S Thompson
Griffin Dunne shared a slice of his family history in a very quiet understated way. . Brilliant. . Well done. . Give us more Griffin.
I watched the docuseries when they see us few days back. She wrote about the innocence of central park five way back in '91. That itself shows how responsible and honest she was with her profession. Definitely going to watch this to know more about her exemplary life and work
This is just sad. Schlock. If you want to know about a writer, READ what that writer wrote.
I was just facinated by Joan Didion's life story, she was a very special lady, so talented, so interesting…Love her.
Too bad no one talks about her swinger lifestyle and orgies.
R.I.P. Joan Didion (1934-2021)
RIP Joan Didion. Have only just discovered her. Can't wait to discover more.
Rip.
R.I.P.
JOAN DIDION
RIP, Joan. A great writer and a great but also sad life. Hope she's now with her husband and daughter.
An interesting thing about Joan Didion Was she suffered from migraine headaches a lot!! I do too. She wrote a great essay about it called ‘’in bed.’’ If you’ve never read it, you should because it’s excellent. When I think of her I’ll always remember her in black sunglasses and a sullen look and a cigarette in her hand. I loved Joan Didion. Rest In Utter Peace!!
I literally just googled her today too show her to a friend to tell her which books of hers to read first and seen she passed YESTERDAY!!! Nooo.
What a life though. RIP JOAN
Blue nights broke my heart.
I actally did not like her books, but this looks interesting
Joan Didion: great writer, yet just another tool of the status quo. Exciting, but ultimately? Yawn. No thanks.
I am reading her for the first time now properly and I have to say: What a powerful voice, what a different perspective.
loved this documentary. can anyone explain the title to me please?
