Can someone please explain to me why this movie is so famous and classic, and got ALOT of awards and Oscars?! After watching it I was like: that's it?! No plot, acting is fine, nothing special…a moderate movie…was it the first of its genre in the early 70s? Is that why?!

7.8 on IMDB for this super mediocre movie? There is no depth in characters what so ever, not the cops nor the mobs.. a total waste of time. It gave no understanding of who is the french connection at all !!!

Auch ein super Film!! – Ich habe fast nur alte Filme "auf Lager", weil ich seit Ewigkeiten nicht mehr im Kino war. Abends war ich auch meist am PC, weil mich das Fernsehen von der Uhrzeit her so festlegte.

    French Connection turns 50 today!
I watched it way back at my second house
One of Gene Hackman's best yet he's only seen it once
Forgot Roy Schieder was in this and that it was based on the book by Robin Moore
Won five oscars including best picture
William Friedman shot this in a documentary style not that common in the early 70s
It came at the beginning of New Hollywood following the fall of the studio system and introduced a new wave of cinema
The movie is actually based on real-life Narcotics Detectives Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso
True there are dramatic liberties taken but that's expected
It still is a police investigation into narcotics at its core but with top notch performances by Hackman and Scheider
The ending is one of the most memorable not just because of a thrilling pursuit but how it doesn't end victoriously
'French Connection' transcends the genre by being above the average crime flick

Love this film, but after having seen it many many times, I finally realized that it may have a fatal flaw. Stop reading my comment right now if you don't want the film to be forever changed by my observation. At the conclusion of the elevated train sequence, Popeye kills the assassin, so why does Charnier go ahead with the deal? Why didn't he simply grab his mistress/girlfriend and get on the next flight back to France and escape? Surely he would have known that his hired gun had failed (or even that he had been killed), because the two of them were in constant communication prior to this point of the film. Any failure in communication with the assassin would have sent alarm bells going off for Charnier, since he was already aware that the cops had been following him since he had arrived. Oh well, the film is more exciting just as it is, but it asks a lot of the viewer to think that Charnier was that desperate for the deal to go down that he went ahead at that point.
